Steam Alpha to arrive on a ‘small set of Chromebooks’ soon

Published:

In a surprise revelation during Google’s Game Developer Summit, the popular gaming platform Steam was revealed to be heading to Chrome OS, and an alpha-quality version of the popular gaming platform is expected to debut on a limited number of Chromebooks shortly.

In addition to crucial features such as bringing Android gaming to the PC, viewers got a peek of the long-rumored Steam client (formerly known as Project Borealis) making its way to Chrome OS. Google didn’t go into detail on this, but Chromebook Community Manager Alisha provided a brief update on when to anticipate the platform to be available for purchase.

According to Alisha, who posted on the Chromebook Forum, “as you may have previously heard, our team is now working with Valve to bring Steam to Chrome OS.” In the next weeks, we’ll be releasing an early, alpha-quality version of Steam for Chrome OS in the Dev channel for a limited number of Chromebooks, which we’re really enthusiastic about. If you require any further information, please return to the forum.”

Considering that this is primarily for the Dev channel, this limited collection of Chromebooks will provide developers with an opportunity to test out Steam Alpha. It has been reported by 9to5Google that the search giant has set a release date for Steam on Chrome OS, along with a list of Chromebooks and minimum system requirements that will be compatible with the platform.

As previously announced, Chromebooks will be required to feature an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor from the 11th generation and a minimum of 7GB of RAM. Some examples of Chromebooks are the Acer Chromebook 514 and Chromebook 515, Acer Chromebook Spin 713, Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 and CX9, HP Pro c640 G2 Chromebook, and others. However, this is simply a first draught of the list, which is likely to increase as the actual release of Steam for Chrome OS approaches.

In particular, we are looking forward to seeing how Steam performs on Chrome OS, since it will allow a few more players to play some of the finest PC games rather than the current top Chromebook titles on the market.
