Intel has introduced a brand-new 55W tier in its 12th Generation ‘Alder Lake’ laptop CPU portfolio, which will be available later this year. The seven new CPU variants, together referred to as the HX series, are essentially desktop-class Alder Lake processors that have been downsized to fit into laptops. With a suitable cooling system, the nominal TDP of 55W can increase to as high as 157W in real-world conditions.
They will be targeted at a new class of high-end gaming and workstation laptops, according to Intel, which revealed them today at its Vision technology conference. These CPUs, which include up to 16 heterogeneous cores, PCIe 5.0, overclocking capabilities, and high-speed networking, are not intended for the thin-and-light market segment.
For a total of 24 threads, the Core i9-12950HX includes eight performance cores with Hyper-Threading and eight efficiency cores, making it the most powerful processor available today. The P cores are capable of reaching a Turbo Boost frequency of 5GHz. There is a total of 30MB of cache capacity available. Despite the fact that this model includes support for Intel’s vPro management system, it otherwise has no differences from the Core i9-12900HX, which is more likely to be found in consumer or gaming laptops. There are additionally three Core i7 models and two Core i5 models, all of which are positioned lower in the stack than the other models.
You receive more cores and a higher TDP limit when comparing the Alder Lake H series to the Kaby Lake H series, although certain models have slightly lower clock rates and include less powerful integrated GPUs. DDR5 and DDR4 memory are supported, with optional error correction and XMP profile switching, however not the low-power equivalents of these memory types are supported. Overclocking of the memory and cores is available on the HX series, with individual controllers for the P and E processor cores.

In particular, the business says that the M1 Max SoC performs better than AMD’s current top-of-the-line Ryzen 6000 series and Apple’s M1 Max SoC, notably in professional and film encoding tasks. Hope so Intel Alder Lake further processors would be good.
In order to assist in allocating workloads to the most appropriate available core or thread, Intel has tightly integrated its Thread Director capability with Windows 11. A discrete GPU may be interfaced with using the 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes available to laptop OEMs, while an extra four PCIe 4.0 lanes can be utilised with up to four NVMe SSDs. There’s also Wi-Fi 6E and Thunderbolt, which may be purchased separately.
Laptop makers such as Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte are among the first to unveil laptop versions based on these new CPUs, as are several other companies. They might also appear in tiny desktops or all-in-one computers, such as Intel’s own NUC line of computers.
