Facebook found to be collecting data from pregnancy crisis websites

Despite the company’s claims, Facebook’s security practises have long been under criticism. According to recent research by CIR and The Markup, Facebook uses this information to persuade and target users. Abortion-related page and website visits are reportedly being monitored by Facebook. By using the search results, we may persuade individuals to look at alternatives to abortion.

According to our study, Facebook scrapes data from the websites of hundreds of anti-abortion clinics. This was confirmed by an investigation by Reveal and the Markup. Blacklight, a Markup tool that employs several forms of user-tracking technologies on websites, is used by the social networking giant, the website claims.

During Reveal’s investigation, 294 of the 2500 crisis pregnancy clinics’ websites were discovered to have shared user data with Facebook. Website administrators found that, in many instances, the data was very confidential. It included details like whether or not a woman intended to get an abortion and whether or not she intended to receive a pregnancy test.

A Facebook spokeswoman told the Reveal that is against corporate policy to disclose private user information.

Websites and applications are not permitted to use our Business Tools, including the advertising technology, to transmit personal information about users. Facebook’s Dale Hogan stated in an interview, “Our technology is meant to filter out potentially sensitive data it discovers, and we seek to educate advertisers on how to properly set up our Business Tools.” Despite repeated requests for information on Facebook’s data-filtering practises and rules related to crisis pregnancy clinics, the company has remained silent.
When someone schedules an appointment for a “abortion consultation” or “pre-termination screening,” the research says that majority of the sites share data to Facebook.

More than 39 websites gave Facebook personal details of users, including name, email address, and phone number, in addition to sharing data about people accessing abortion sites.
