Windows Android Subsystem update adds new features

Published:

The Windows 11 Android Subsystem has been undergoing extensive testing, and the resulting July 2022 feature update is now available to users. Updates and fixes have been integrated into Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) version 2205.40000.14.0.

In Windows 11, the Android Subsystem will be integrated with improved networking capabilities, allowing apps to access local devices on ARM hardware. This paves the way for apps to make use of the feature. Microsoft is doing the same thing by introducing two new capabilities: IPv6 and VPN support.

All users have access to the subsystem’s updated networking features. The Settings app has also been updated to include some new features. You undoubtedly already know that WSA has its own dedicated settings panel, and with today’s update, Microsoft has added some enhancements to that panel.

Here is everything that has changed in Windows 11 since the July 2022 WSA update:

  • In order to facilitate Advanced Networking features, Microsoft has enabled them. This allows ARM applications to communicate with networked devices on the local area.
  • The virtual machine’s IP address has been changed so that it corresponds with that of the host computer.
  • The problems with maximising or resizing have been resolved by Microsoft.
  • Microsoft has addressed problems with mouse and trackpad scrolling in software.
  • Microsoft has verified that protected windows cannot be screenshotted with the recent privacy changes. This includes Chrome’s anonymous browsing mode.
  • Microsoft is working to make it easier to launch web browsers.
  • Doze and app standby have been enabled.
  • We have upgraded to Chromium WebView 101.
  • Microsoft has addressed several problems, such as app flickering and graphics corruption, as well as problems with video playback and the network. In reality, according to Microsoft, the upgrade improves both the speed and stability of virtual WiFi connections.
  • Microsoft is enhancing app video playback and introducing AV1 Codec support.
  • Connectivity over IPv6 and VPN has been enabled
  • Microsoft has resolved difficulties with Windows video playback, including a bug that prevented the screen from going dark.

Microsoft is aware of a few of known concerns, including a fault where some VPNs may not operate with Advanced Networking, but is focused on fixing the vast majority of those problems for the July 2022 release. If you use a VPN, you may have problems; however, turning off Advanced Networking in the options menu should solve the problem.
