The Heavy Rain Builder Quantic Dream Acquired By NetEase

Quantic states that they will maintain the independence of Quantic.’

French producer of video games Quantic Dream is an independent studio that has been bought by Chinese tech firm NetEase.

Quantic has a long history of games released beginning the year 1999 when they released Omikron: The Nomad Soul that was later followed with Fahrenheit, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and, most recently, Detroit: to Become Human. The studio is currently working on the Star Wars Eclipse(Opens in brand new browser) to be released by Lucasfilm Games, but will be releasing it in conjunction with NetEase Games.

NetEase was a minority shareholder of Quantic Dream back in 2019 and, in the blog post(Opens in an entirely new window) that announced the purchase, Quantic explains how it is now in need of larger investments in order to further develop its infrastructure and technology. NetEase will be able to offer such funding, but Quantic adds that “we will retain our independence in terms of our editorial line, the artistic direction of our projects and the management of the studio.”

Its NetEase Games division has made numerous important partnership and investments with well-known game companies in the last few years. It has a partnership in partnership with Blizzard Entertainment to publish and operate the games it develops in China It has also made investments in Bungie and also bought Grasshopper Manufacture and GungHo Online Entertainment this year.
