S’pore WhatsApp users are urged to update their app to fix security holes

Published:

WhatsApp users in Singapore were urged to update to the most recent version to fix two security holes that could allow hackers to take complete control of the app.

The Singapore Computer Emergency Response Team (SingCert), which issued the alert Wednesday, advised users to install the latest version “immediately”, even though there have been no reports of active exploit of the loopholes.

An attacker can take control of an app during a video conference.

The second security flaw affects WhatsApp’s video file handler component. This allows hackers to send video files and convince the target user to play them.

The first vulnerability affects the following WhatsApp versions:

  • WhatsApp for iOS and Android before version 2.22.16.12
  • WhatsApp Business for iOS & Android before version 2.22.16.12
  • Users with these versions are vulnerable to the second vulnerability
  • WhatsApp for Android version 2.22.16.2
  • WhatsApp for iOS version before 2.22.15.9

SingCert said that users can search the app store for the most recent updates and are encouraged enable automatic updates to make sure their apps are up-to-date promptly.
