Microsoft has stopped the Windows 11 22H2 Update from being offered due to compatibility issues that affect Windows devices using printers that use Universal Print Class Driver or Microsoft IPP Class Driver.
Some printers may not allow customers to use certain features, such as color or 2-sided printing.
To identify the features of the printer, Windows needs to be connected to the printer. Microsoft explained that without connectivity, the printer will be set up with default settings. In some cases, it might not get updated after connectivity is restored.
This issue could affect your printer if it is unable or unwilling to use certain features, such as color, duplex/two-sided printing, paper size, type settings or resolutions greater than 300x300dpi.
Redmond has created a compatibility lock (safeguard ID 41332279), which only applies to Windows 11 22H2 with printers that use Universal Print Class or Microsoft IPP Class drivers.
Microsoft recommends that customers do not manually install Windows 11 2022 Updates on affected systems via the Media Creation Tool, or the “Update Now” button, until the known issue has been resolved and the safeguard removed.
Redmond said, “We are working to resolve this issue and will provide an updated in an upcoming publication.”
“We are working to target only Windows printer drivers that incorrectly allow default settings. We will update as soon as more information becomes available.”
There are solutions for the affected systems
Microsoft stated that Windows 11 customers can work around the issue by using default settings to allow printers to be used. This means that they will not need to remove or reinstall the affected printers.
Microsoft claims that reinstalling the printer will cause Windows to download and reinstall drivers. This should resolve the problem.
Redmond explained in a support document that “Windows doesn’t automatically locate a new driver after adding the printer to its list”,
Customers affected by the security breach can still upgrade to Windows 11 22H2 using Microsoft IPP Class and Universal Print Class drivers.
Microsoft stated that the Windows 11 2022 update could take up to 48 hours if their device isn’t affected by any other compatibility.
It might be possible to get the update quicker by restarting the affected system and checking Windows Update for updates.
Microsoft has added a compatibility block to the Windows 11 22H2 Update on systems equipped with Intel Smart Sound Technology audio drivers. This is due to a known issue that causes blue screens of death (BSODs).
