Google Pixel Fold leak shows promising camera but a sub-par design

It looks more like a larger Pixel.

We are used to the details of forthcoming phones being leaked, but Google’s handsets have been getting leaked in great detail well before launch. The latest example is the Pixel Fold.

There have been rumors about the Google Pixel Fold for a while, but high-quality renderings now show the probable design.

These images were shared by YouTube channel FrontPageTech (opens in new tab). While they are not official renders, they were created using images and information from the channel’s sources.

These renders are in most ways exactly what you would expect from a foldable Pixel. The back of the device features a similar camera block to that on Pixel 7 and a secondary screen that is not foldable with a punch hole camera. This makes it look a little like a larger Pixel 7.

You’ll find a larger, foldable display when you unfold it. However, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, this foldable screen doesn’t include a punch hole camera. There are large bezels both above and below the display. One of them houses a selfie camera.

Additional details include that both the screens have a resolution of 9.5MP and the phone comes in white and black.

The power button has a fingerprint sensor, while the speakers are located at the top and bottom edges. Although the phone’s name is not yet known, FrontPageTech sources claim that it is internally called the Pixel Fold and this could be the release name.

The Google Pixel Fold will be available for purchase starting in May. However, it is recommended that you start saving as the phone will cost $1,799 (around AU$2,660 / PS1,520). It’s not surprising that the price is the same as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 in the US.

We’d normally take this information with a grain of salt. However, FrontPageTech’s face and voice Jon Prosser claims to be “very confident in this information.”

Analysis: A camera coup is possible, but the design must be improved

If the leak is true, it contains both promising and not so promising information.

The cameras are the most promising feature. The back appears to have three cameras, similar to the Google Pixel 7 Pro. The camera bar appears to be similar in size, so it is possible that the same assortment of lenses and sensors are used. This would be great news as the Pixel 7 Pro’s excellent cameras and this is an area that most foldables fall short.

The design is not as impressive, but the cameras are strong. The phone looks great when folded closed, even though it is a bit bulky due to the large camera bar. It looks cheap when it’s opened, due to the large bezels that are above and below it.

The leakers claim that the phone is very heavy. Although they don’t give much more detail, it could be heavier than other foldables.

The Pixel Fold is expected to be priced in line with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. This will make it difficult for the Pixel Fold to compete. Right now, it seems like a mixed bag. If the cameras are good, this could make the device one of the top foldable phones.
