Google is bringing down its Google Play Movies & TV app to streamline its media services. The app is now on the list of Google discontinued services.
Google Play Movies & TV will no longer be available as part of the search engine giant’s strategy to simplify its entertainment offerings. Several devices, including Roku and most smart TVs, have already withdrawn the app. The company is now moving Android and iOS customers to the Google TV app. Google plans to progressively decommission its software.
Google’s Portfolio Shift – A Look at Discontinued Services
Google+, Google Play Music, Google Allo, Stadia, and Google Surveys are among the popular services that are listed in Google’s discontinued services. Both Google Allo (an IM app) and Google Stadia (a video game platform) debuted in 2019 and will be removed from the market in 2023, respectively. Google Surveys, an enterprise product, was turned off in 2022 following a decade of service. These changes show that Google is serious about rethinking its products and services with the customer in mind.
Google’s Plan for Uninterrupted Entertainment
The whole shutdown of Google Play Movies & TV is expected to take place in January 2024. Google has already started working on a plan that would ensure customers can keep watching the shows and movies they’ve downloaded to their phones without interruptions.
Starting January 17, 2024, customers of Android TV-powered TVs and streaming devices will see a Shop button inside the YouTube app, according to Google’s Android TV Help support page. The main place they will go to buy or rent movies and TV shows is this tab. This will further ensure that users who are used to watching movies and TV shows on Android TV will have no trouble switching.

YouTube Takes Center Stage: The Future of Streaming on Android TV
The YouTube app will supersede Google Play Movies & TV on Android TV set-top boxes and cable boxes. The YouTube app will now have the capability to stream and rent content. People who use the internet to find Google discontinued apps will find YouTube as their next go-to source of entertainment.
These changes mean that neither Android TV devices nor the Google Play website will have access to Google Play Movies & TV or any other Google discontinued apps. Contrarily, as mentioned on the support page, you will still have access to all of your previously bought titles—including active rentals—on YouTube, Google TV, Android TV, and the Google TV mobile app (iOS and Android).
While this is happening, a story from 9to5 Google asserts that the company has begun sending users to the YouTube app’s Shop tab. Customers may rest certain that their entertainment experience will remain uninterrupted. This process ensures a seamless transition regardless of platform alterations by adhering to Google’s commitment to maintaining user access to paid items.
