iPhone is set to receive exciting new artificial intelligence (AI) features with the upcoming release of iOS 18 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024.
Apple is developing AI services for iPhones as part of its ongoing efforts to keep pace with its competitors. Ever since the release of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s highly popular AI chatbot, technology companies have been eagerly incorporating AI tools into their hardware and software offerings. Microsoft, a company with a strong interest in AI, introduced its own generative AI chatbot, Bing Chat (now called Copilot), and integrated the technology into its various applications and services.
Google quickly released Bard and has since incorporated numerous AI features into its products, following a shaky beginning. Samsung is preparing to release its upcoming lineup of flagship Galaxy S series smartphones, which will be equipped with advanced AI capabilities, later this month. Apple, however, has fallen significantly behind its competitors in the AI race, despite its ongoing efforts to develop its own generative AI offerings as iOS 18 features. The company is expected to make the announcement for the Apple iOS 18 update at its WWDC later this year.
What’s New in iOS 18
Apple plans to integrate its generative AI technology into iOS 18. The iPhone manufacturer is developing its own large language model (LLM), codenamed Ajax, and is expected to unveil its AI offerings at WWDC as the latest Apple iOS 18 update. Apple has been testing its Apple iOS 18 AI model since early 2023.
New iOS 18 Features
As mobile technology continues to advance, different companies are making strides in integrating AI into their smartphones. Google has already launched its Pixel 8 series, which is equipped with AI capabilities. Samsung is also joining the AI trend with its upcoming Galaxy smartphones.
Meanwhile, Apple is working on developing AI services for the iPhone, aiming to keep up with its competitors. There are potential new iOS 18 features in the pipeline for Apple’s core apps and productivity software, such as Pages and Keynote. These additions may include auto-summarizing and auto-complete functionalities.
AI and Siri
The company based in Cupertino, California, also intends to incorporate Apple iOS 18 AI into Apple Music to enhance playlists and recommendations. Apple’s on-device assistant Siri is also in line for an AI upgrade as advanced chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot gain momentum in the field. The company’s AI offerings are expected to be released later this year. However, it will take at least a year for the company to fully implement its generative AI vision on a larger scale.
The upcoming iPhone 16 models will come with an enhanced microphone that will greatly improve the Siri experience and voice input. The Siri team at Apple has been diligently developing LLMs and other AI features since Q3 2023.
Apple in News
Apple is said to be in talks with publishers to train its generative AI systems using news content. The company had apparently offered long-term contracts valued at a minimum of $50 million (approximately Rs. 420 crore) to obtain licenses for news article archives from publishers such as Condé Nast, the New Yorker, NBC News, and others.
Apple unveiled the latest additions to its product lineup – the iPad Pro (2022), the iPad (2022), and the new Apple TV. What do you think about Apple’s new AI development? Let us know in the comments.
