Windows 10 is now fully out of support for most home users. Free updates ended in October 2025, and the one-year paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) for home users ended in October 2026. If your old laptop or desktop can’t run Windows 11, you don’t have to throw it away. Google’s free ChromeOS Flex can turn it into a fast, secure, Chromebook-like computer in about 30 minutes.
We tested ChromeOS Flex on an old PC. Here’s our full review: how fast it is, what it can and can’t do, how it compares with Windows 10, and how to install it step by step.

What Is ChromeOS Flex?
ChromeOS Flex is a free operating system from Google, made for regular Windows PCs and Macs. It’s based on ChromeOS, the same system that runs Chromebooks, and it’s designed to give old hardware a second life. Everything happens through the Chrome browser and web apps, so it needs very little power to feel fast.
Why Install ChromeOS Flex in 2026?
- Windows 10 no longer gets security fixes for most home users, so using it online is risky.
- Your PC may not support Windows 11, which needs TPM 2.0 and a newer processor.
- It’s completely free, with no licence or subscription.
- Automatic security updates from Google, with no antivirus needed.
- Very lightweight: it boots in seconds and stays fast on 4GB RAM.
- Linux apps are supported for developers and power users.
ChromeOS Flex Minimum Requirements
According to Google, your PC needs:
| Processor | Intel or AMD x86-64-bit |
| RAM | 4GB (8GB recommended) |
| Storage | 16GB (an SSD makes a big difference) |
| Boot | Must be able to boot from USB |
| BIOS | Full administrator access |
Won’t work well: Google says Intel or AMD processors and graphics from 2012 or earlier, and Nvidia graphics from 2014 or earlier, are unlikely to work properly. Check Google’s certified models list to see if your exact laptop or desktop is tested.
ChromeOS Flex vs Windows 10 on an Old PC
| Feature | ChromeOS Flex | Windows 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Boot speed (old PC) | About 8–10 seconds | 45–90 seconds |
| RAM used at idle | About 1.5GB | About 2.5–3.5GB |
| Security updates | Yes, automatic from Google | Ended for most home users |
| Apps | Web apps, Chrome extensions, Linux apps | All Windows software |
| Android apps / Play Store | Not supported | Not supported |
| Gaming | Cloud gaming and some Linux games | Full PC games (with a good GPU) |
| Price | Free | Free, but no longer updated |
| Best for | Browsing, YouTube, online classes, office work | Windows-only software |
Verdict: On older hardware, ChromeOS Flex feels faster, cleaner and safer than Windows 10. Stick with Windows only if you depend on Windows-only software like Tally, Adobe Premiere or PC games.
Our Test: Performance and Experience
We installed ChromeOS Flex on an old Dell PC with an Intel Core i5 4th Gen and 4GB RAM. Here’s what we found:
- Boot time: About 9 seconds
- YouTube at 1080p: Smooth playback
- Web browsing: 10+ tabs open without freezing
- Google Meet: Slight lag, but usable
- Multitasking: Better than expected for basic work
There were no crashes and no heating problems, and it felt much more responsive than Windows 10 on the same machine.
What Apps Can You Use?
ChromeOS Flex does not have the Google Play Store and can’t run Android apps. You still get a lot:
- Web apps (PWAs): WhatsApp Web, Spotify, Zoom, Discord, Canva, Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint online)
- Google apps: Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Gmail, Meet, Photos
- Linux apps: Turn on the Linux development environment in Settings to install apps like LibreOffice, GIMP and VS Code
- Cloud gaming: Services that run in the browser, such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW (where available)
How to Install ChromeOS Flex (Step by Step)
What You Need
- The old PC or laptop you want to convert
- A USB drive with 8GB or more (it will be erased)
- Another computer with the Google Chrome browser
Important: Installing ChromeOS Flex erases everything on the PC’s drive. Back up your photos and documents to Google Drive or an external drive first.
Steps
- On the working computer, open Chrome and install the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open the extension, click Get started, choose Select a model from a list, and pick Google ChromeOS Flex.
- Insert your USB drive, select it, and click Create now. Wait for it to finish.
- Plug the USB into the old PC and turn it on. Press the boot menu key (usually F12, F9, F10 or Esc, depending on the brand) and choose the USB drive.
- When ChromeOS Flex loads, choose Try it first to test it without installing. Check Wi-Fi, sound, the touchpad and the camera.
- If everything works, choose Install ChromeOS Flex and follow the steps. Then sign in with your Google account.
Tip: If the PC won’t boot from USB, enter the BIOS (usually F2 or Del), enable USB boot, and try again. Some older PCs also need Secure Boot turned off.

Final Verdict
With Windows 10 support over, ChromeOS Flex is one of the best free ways to keep an old computer useful and safe. It costs nothing to test.
