MacBook Pro M6 vs M5: Price in India, Specs and Should You Buy?

Published:

Quick answer: Apple launched the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the new M6 chip in India on 28 October 2026 at a starting price of ₹2,39,900 (16GB RAM, 1TB SSD). Pre-orders are open and sales begin on 6 November. The M6 brings a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, Wi-Fi 7 and a 1TB base SSD, but the design, display and battery rating are the same as last year’s M5 model. If you already own an M5 or M4 MacBook Pro, skip it. If you are on an Intel Mac or an M1, it is a strong upgrade, but the M5 model at its current discounted price is the better deal for most Indian buyers.

In this article we compare the MacBook Pro M6 and M5 side by side, explain the big price jump in India, and help you decide which one (if either) to buy this Diwali season.

What Is Actually New in the M6 MacBook Pro?

1. A bigger chip on a 2nm process

The M6 is Apple’s first chip built on a 2nm process. It adds two cores to both the CPU and GPU compared to M5. Apple claims the M6 gives up to 30% faster graphics and up to 25% faster AI workloads than M5. Apple also quotes up to 1.3x faster Xcode code builds and up to 1.3x faster ray-traced rendering in Blender. These are Apple’s own numbers. Wait for independent reviews before you treat them as real-world gains.

2. 1TB storage as standard

This is the most useful change for regular buyers. The M5 model started at 512GB, which fills up fast if you edit video or keep big project files. The M6 starts at 1TB, so you no longer need to pay extra for a storage upgrade on day one.

3. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6

Apple’s own N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Apple says AirDrop and Personal Hotspot are also faster and more reliable. Wi-Fi 7 only helps if you have a Wi-Fi 7 router, which is still rare in Indian homes, so most people will not feel this right away.

What has not changed

The design, the 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, the 12MP Center Stage camera, the six-speaker sound system, the port layout and the 24-hour battery rating are all carried over from the M5 model. If you put the two side by side, you cannot tell them apart.

Why Is the M6 MacBook Pro So Expensive in India?

The M5 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD launched at ₹1,89,900. The M6 with the same memory and storage costs ₹2,39,900. That is a ₹50,000 jump in one year. Reports link the hike to the global memory chip shortage that has pushed up RAM and SSD prices across the industry this year. Whatever the reason, it makes the M6 a hard sell in India, especially compared to discounted M5 stock.

Right now, the M5 MacBook Pro with 16GB/512GB is listed at ₹1,69,900 on Flipkart, and has been seen selling for around ₹1,61,000 to ₹1,64,000 on Amazon and Flipkart in October. With the M6 now out, more discounts on M5 stock are likely during the festive sales.

Pros and Cons of the MacBook Pro M6

Pros

  • Faster 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU (Apple claims up to 30% faster graphics)
  • 1TB SSD as standard, double the M5’s base storage
  • Up to 24 hours of video playback, among the best on any laptop
  • Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 make it more future-proof
  • Excellent display, speakers and full set of ports (HDMI, SD card, MagSafe)

Cons

  • ₹50,000 more than the M5 model with the same RAM and storage
  • Same design and display as last year
  • Only Thunderbolt 4 ports; Thunderbolt 5 is limited to the pricier M5 Pro and M5 Max models
  • Supports only two external displays
  • Base 16GB RAM is enough for most people, but serious AI or video work needs the costlier 24GB or 32GB variants

Who Should Buy the MacBook Pro M6?

  • Buy it if you are on an Intel MacBook or an M1/M2 MacBook Pro, you edit video or code for a living, and you want a laptop that will last five or more years. The extra GPU cores, 1TB SSD and Wi-Fi 7 make sense over that long a period.
  • Skip it if you already own an M4 or M5 MacBook Pro. The gains are small and the design is identical.
  • Buy the M5 instead if you want MacBook Pro features (better display, speakers, fans and ports than the Air) at a much lower price. Look for festive-sale deals on the M5 model, and add an external SSD if 512GB is too small.
  • Consider the MacBook Air M5 if you mainly browse, study, write and do light photo editing. The 13-inch M5 Air with 16GB/512GB is listed at around ₹1,49,900 MRP and often sells for less. It does not have the Pro’s fan, HDMI port or brighter XDR display, but it is lighter and costs much less.
  • On a tight budget? A Mac mini is the cheapest way into Apple silicon if you already have a monitor. Read our Mac mini M4 under ₹55,000 review.

Verdict

The MacBook Pro M6 is a solid spec update: more CPU and GPU cores, double the base storage and newer wireless. But it looks and feels exactly like the M5 model, and in India it costs ₹50,000 more for the same 16GB/1TB setup. For most Indian buyers, a discounted M5 MacBook Pro or an M5 MacBook Air is the smarter buy this festive season. The M6 is for professionals coming from older Macs who want the newest chip and plan to keep their laptop for many years.
