This feature is available without the need for an AMD GPU.
AMD announced that Fidelity FX Super Resolution upscaling will be available in a new version, FSR3, during the Radeon 7000’s launch. Fluid Motion Frames will be included in the updated version, which will double frames per second.
Scott Herkelman, AMD general manager, acknowledged that Fluid Motion Frames technology is similar in purpose to Nivida’s DLSS Frame Generation but not in the process. AMD demonstrated this tech with Unreal Engine 5. The frame rate increased from 60fps using FSR 2 up to 112fps when using FSR 3. We are still waiting to hear from AMD about the details of FSR 3.
There are currently 216 games supporting FSR in some capacity, and that number will continue to rise according to AMD. This is great news as it is available to all GPU owners, not just AMD users. FRS 2 can be used to increase frame rates by owners of Nvidia GeForce RTX1080 or higher. It is reasonable to assume that many cards will have FRS 3 support. AMD reminds that older GPUs can be included in the compatible list. However, you might not see a significant performance increase when using FSR 2.
Get that sweet sweet FPS!
More open technology is always very exciting to us, and rather than horde its performance-enhancing tech and attach it to only its hardware, AMD has made it available to almost all PC gaming consumers so they can enjoy higher frame rates and advanced graphical effects without having to splash out on new hardware. You could be skeptical and argue that AMD is trying to convince consumers it is a marketing tactic to make them believe AMD is supporting the consumer, but this is still a welcome change from Nvidia’s more exclusive approach.
FRS 3 is a positive note that makes better gaming more affordable for everyone. For those of us with older GPUs or low-powered machines that cannot afford an upgrade, we can still enjoy our games at higher settings.
