What you should know
- Microsoft has released a preview of Android 13 in the Windows 11 Subsystem For Android.
- This preview contains several fixes and improvements for the Windows Subsystem.
- You can sign up for Android 13 via Windows Subsystem For Android Preview.
Windows 11 users now have the ability to run Android 13 on their computers thanks to a preview program for Windows Subsystem for Android.
Although the preview was announced quietly on Github (via Thurrott), it went largely unnoticed. Update 221.142.0000.7.0 includes performance improvements and fixes to the subsystem, as well as an upgrade of WSA from Android 13 to Android 13.
The following items are included in the changelog:
- Windows subsystem for Android has been updated to Android 13
- A new command was added that closes down WSA to automate
- Performance improvements in boots (50%, P10 case).
- Improvements in mouse click input
- Clipboard stability improvements
- Improvements in application resizing
- Android 13 has been upgraded to Intel bridge technology
- Improved reliability for media files opening in Windows
- Jumplist entries to applications that support app shortcuts
The Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) allows Windows 11 computers running Android apps. Official Android apps can be downloaded from Amazon Appstore. However, sideloading Android apps onto Windows 11 is possible if the app you are looking for is not available in the Appstore.
You must sign up to the Windows Subsystem For Android preview program in order to install Android 13 on your computer. This is separate from the Windows Insider program. There are some requirements that you must meet, such as having the Amazon Appstore installed and at least 8GB RAM. You also need an ARM64 or x64 processor. Microsoft’s preview page (opens in a new tab) allows you to sign up.
Microsoft has many upgrades planned for WSA, including Android 13. Microsoft has other features, including file transfers and picture in-picture support, on the WSA roadmap.
Although it is not clear when Android 13 will be available to all Windows 11 users, we can hope that it won’t take too long. WSA was just updated to Android 12L this year.
