According to the latest iPhone 14 Pro leak, the next iPhones will include an Apple Always on Display (AoD). Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg reporter, speculates that the iPhone 14 Pro models will be the first iPhones to use AoD, allowing users to see lock screen content without tapping the screen to wake it.
According to Gurman’s Power On newsletter, the new weather, fitness, and other lock screen widgets in iOS 16 will be compatible with AoD on iPhone 14 Pro models. The iPhone 14 Pro, like the Apple Watch, will have the ability to display widgets like the time, date, the weather, the stock market, upcoming events, and other information while maintaining a low brightness and frame rate, according to Gurman. Additionally, he mentioned that, like the Apple Watch, there would be a choice to prevent private information from being displayed on the lock screen.

Apple’s goal with AoD was to maximise its efficiency in terms of battery life, hence it features a low-brightness display and a slow refresh rate. There have been rumours that the refresh rate on the iPhone 14 Pro versions can drop as low as 1Hz thanks to the inclusion of ProMotion technology. The displays of the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Max currently refresh at a rate of 10Hz to 120Hz.
In all likelihood, Apple will continue to reserve AoD for its flagship iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Max models. If you have an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Max, tapping the screen to wake it up is the only way to see what’s new on the lock screen.
The 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch OLED displays mentioned in the leaks are for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, respectively. For the front-facing camera and Face ID sensor, both phones will have a pill-shaped notch in the centre of the top.
The A16 Bionic processor with 6GB of RAM is also said to be included in the iPhone 14 Pro variants. Camera-wise, the iPhone 14 Pro will receive an update to a new 48MP sensor, which is claimed to be 57% bigger than the sensor in the iPhone 13 Pro. The gadgets will still have three cameras and a LiDAR sensor on the rear.
Important information concerning the batteries has also been made public. The battery of the iPhone 14 Pro will be 3200 mAh. The battery capacity of the iPhone 13 Pro is 3095 mAh for comparison. However, the iPhone 14 Pro Max will feature a larger battery capacity of 4323 mAh. There will be compatibility for 20W fast charging on both smartphones, just as the iPhone 13 series.
