“Hey Siri” is leaving
Apple plans to simplify asking Siri an inquiry a bit more simple by removing the requirement to make a statement like “Hey Siri” – it’s reported to be preparing to reduce the phrase “wake” to “Siri”.
The intelligent assistant, that can be activated by Apple devices such as iPhone 14, iPad Pro 12.9 (2022), iPhone 14, iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) and HomePod mini speaker is activated by several methods, but the most simple is using the phrase “wake. The simple act of saying “Hey Siri” before your request or question triggers Siri to display the request or query you have made.
But, repeating “Hey Siri” over and over again if you require assistance with a variety of tasks in rapid time is more than just an annoying task So we’re thrilled to learn that Apple is planning to reduce the word “Hey Siri” and it could become the very first move in getting rid of it altogether.
As per Blomberg’s Mark Gurman(opens in a new browser), Apple is planning to modify “Hey Siri” to just “Siri,” though don’t anticipate anything to happen in the next few hours. The idea of reducing the wake-up phrase to one word can pose many challenges. If the the device software isn’t calibrated properly it will be much more easy to turn on Siri by accident, or difficult to reach Siri through your voice.
If the change goes through, then it would bring Siri to the same level as Amazon’s most popular smart speakers, which are it’s Amazon Echo devices. The users only have to use the word “Alexa” before asking questions or requesting instructions to receive the assistance of their Echo.
Google however, on its own, needs you to use “Hey/OK Google” to instruct its Google Pixel 7, Google Nest Mini, and other smart devices to respond to most words but if you turn it to turn the Quick Phrases feature on, there are some phrases that you can use that don’t require any wake words at all like “Stop” when an alarm is set to go off.
Google has been reported to be looking to enhance the functionality of the Google Nest Hub Max or Smart Hub Max, and have custom phrases being developed that could remove the requirement to say “Hey Google” ever again. It’s unclear if Apple will follow suit however if it wishes for its intelligent assistant to be similar to the ones developed through Amazon or Google it shouldn’t wish to be left ahead of its competitors in terms of its innovation.
It’s true that the removal of “Hey” from “Hey Siri” could require some time. According to Gurman the feature is still in its initial testing phases and isn’t likely to arrive until a one or two years. We think it could be showcased in WWDC 2023-2024, as an upgrade to be available on iOS 17 , or iOS 18.
