Despite ExpressVPN’s global popularity, the Indian government has ordered it to shut down its India servers after ExpressVPN failed to comply with the government’s new requirements for VPN services. There has been a backlash to the Indian government’s order to VPN service providers operating in the country. All VPN service providers in India are required by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), an organisation under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), to keep their users’ data for at least five years. Users’ account information, including their names, IP addresses, and online activity were required to be stored by service providers under the law.
The decision was widely panned by the VPN sector, but the government offered no respite, so VPN companies began to shut down their India servers in order to avoid being held in contempt. Both NordVPN and ExpressVPN have either ceased operations in India or shut down their Indian servers.
A recent data regulation in India mandates that all VPN companies preserve user information for at least five years, hence ExpressVPN has decided to deactivate its Indian-based VPN servers.
