For quite some time, rumors have swirled around Google’s foldable smartphone, which will be part of the Pixel portfolio. Now, new leaks claim that the device will make its debut before the end of this year. The foldable Pixel smartphone is rumored to be called “Passport,” and it is expected to include an OLED display made of low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO).

Several of Samsung’s foldable products, including the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3, have successfully entered the market for folding screens. On the other hand, it appears as though foldable smartphones are becoming a more frequent form factor for high-end smartphones. Several more smartphone manufacturers, including Vivo and Xiaomi, are allegedly developing additional foldable devices.

Apparently, according to a tweet by tipster Evan Blass, the forthcoming foldable Pixel smartphone, codenamed “Passport,” will be released by Google before the end of this year. In his statement, he stated that Google has been working on this new smartphone for more than two years.

This isn’t the first time that the Google Pixel Fold’s release date has been teased in this manner. David Naranjo, Senior Director, Display Supply Chain Consultants, also shared his thoughts on the Google Pixel Fold’s development through Twitter. His post suggested that the device may be released in the fourth quarter of 2021. (October 1 to December 31). The LTPO OLED panel for the Google Pixel Fold, according to the report, will be used. In addition, the expert predicts that the Google Pixel 6 Pro will be released in the same quarter.

Google said in 2019 that it has begun developing prototypes for foldable smartphones. In addition, the firm offered support for flexible screens in Android 10, which was used by businesses such as Samsung to create their own foldable phones in-house. With the forthcoming Google Pixel Fold, there is undoubtedly room for Google to take on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, as well as the recently announced Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, among other devices.

Huawei made a statement in the foldable smartphone market with its Mate X and X2 folding smartphones. Also in March of this year, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi announced the Mi Mix Fold, which is the company’s first foldable smartphone and the world’s first folding smartphone. Other firms, such as Oppo and Vivo, are also planning to release foldable smartphones in the near future. It is also anticipated to be launched in India throughout the remaining months of this year.

In terms of whether Google intends to introduce a foldable phone or whether it is simply testing prototypes to make Android better optimized for existing and upcoming foldable smartphones on the market, no specifics have been disclosed. Once it is launched, the Pixel Fold may be able to compete with these foldable smartphones.
