How to Install PrimeOS on PC Without Errors (2026 Guide + Better Alternatives)

Published:

Quick answer: You can still install PrimeOS on a Windows PC or laptop in 2026. Download the PrimeOS 2.1.3 64-bit ISO from SourceForge, write it to a USB drive with Rufus, turn off Secure Boot, boot from the USB and choose the install option. But you should know one thing first: the free PC version of PrimeOS has not been updated since July 2022. It is based on Android 11 and is still marked BETA. The newer PrimeOS 3.0 runs only on Primebook laptops. So this guide covers both: how to install PrimeOS properly without errors, and which modern options make more sense if you mainly want to play Android games on a low-end PC.

Our original PrimeOS installation video (2021). The steps still match the 2.x builds; read the updated notes below before you start.

PrimeOS in 2026: what has changed

PrimeOS is an Android-based operating system made by an Indian team. It gives Android a desktop look with a taskbar, start menu and windows, and it has a built-in key mapping tool so you can play mobile games with keyboard and mouse. That is why it became popular in India as a free way to run games like Free Fire and BGMI-style titles on old computers.

Here is where things stand today:

  • Latest PC version: PrimeOS 2.1.3 64-bit BETA, file name PrimeOS-2.1.3-64-bit-20220719-BETA.iso, about 1.8 GB, released on 20 July 2022. Nothing newer has been released for normal PCs.
  • Android version: Android 11 for the 2.x builds. Older Classic, Standard and Mainline builds (version 0.4.5 to 0.6.1, from 2021) are also still on SourceForge for very old machines.
  • PrimeOS 3.0: Based on Android 15 and made for Primebook laptops only. In September 2025 the Primebook team said on its official forum that PrimeOS 3.0 “won’t be available for other devices”.
  • Old website: primeos.in now redirects to primebook.in. The old 2.x downloads are hosted on SourceForge.

What this means for you: PrimeOS 2.1.3 still installs and works on many PCs, but it gets no security updates, and some newer games and apps may refuse to run or ask for a newer Android version. Use it for light gaming and experiments, not for banking or important accounts.

Requirements before you start

Item What you need
Processor 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU for PrimeOS 2.x (use the Classic build only for very old 32-bit machines)
RAM 4 GB or more works best; 2 GB will boot but games will struggle
Storage At least 16 GB free; around 32 GB is better if you will install games
USB drive 8 GB or bigger (it will be fully erased)
Software PrimeOS ISO from SourceForge and Rufus (free) on a Windows PC
BIOS settings Secure Boot turned off; know your boot menu key
Backup Back up important files before touching partitions

Common boot menu keys on laptops sold in India: HP F9, Dell F12, Lenovo F12 (or the small Novo button), Asus Esc or F8, Acer F12, MSI F11. For desktop boards it is usually F8, F11 or F12.

Step-by-step: install PrimeOS without errors

Step 1: Download the right ISO

Open the official PrimeOS project on SourceForge and go to the 64-bit folder. Download PrimeOS-2.1.3-64-bit-20220719-BETA.iso. Avoid “PrimeOS download” sites that offer modified ISOs or “latest 2026 version” files; there is no newer official PC build, so those are unofficial at best and risky at worst.

Step 2: Make free space for PrimeOS (for dual boot)

If you want to keep Windows, press Win + X and open Disk Management. Right-click a drive with free space (for example D:), choose Shrink Volume and shrink about 32,000 MB. Leave it as unallocated space. Also turn off Fast Startup in Control Panel > Power Options > “Choose what the power buttons do”, because it can stop the other OS from reading the disk properly.

Step 3: Create a bootable USB with Rufus

  1. Plug in the USB drive and open Rufus.
  2. Under Device, select your USB drive.
  3. Click Select and choose the PrimeOS ISO.
  4. Set Partition scheme to GPT for modern UEFI PCs (most PCs from 2015 onwards) or MBR for old Legacy BIOS PCs.
  5. Click Start. If Rufus asks, choose ISO Image mode. If boot fails later, redo this step with DD Image mode.

Step 4: Turn off Secure Boot

Restart and enter BIOS setup (usually F2 or Del). Find Secure Boot under the Boot or Security tab and set it to Disabled. Save and exit. PrimeOS is not signed for Secure Boot, so with it turned on the USB will simply not boot or will show a security violation message.

Step 5: Boot from the USB

Restart and press your boot menu key. Select the USB drive (choose the “UEFI” entry if you made a GPT drive). You will see the PrimeOS boot menu. To test first, choose the live/run option and check that Wi-Fi, sound, touchpad and display work.

Step 6: Install PrimeOS

  1. From the boot menu choose the Install option.
  2. When the installer asks for a partition, choose Create/Modify partitions and create a new partition in the unallocated space you made in Step 2. Be very careful not to select your Windows partition.
  3. Format the new partition as ext4.
  4. Say Yes to installing the GRUB/EFI boot loader so you get a menu to choose between PrimeOS and Windows.
  5. Say Yes when asked to make the system read-write (this helps with updates and root apps).
  6. Remove the USB and reboot when it finishes.

Step 7: First setup and game key mapping

On first boot, connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to your Google account in the Play Store. PrimeOS includes a key mapping tool for games: open a game, open the key mapping tool from the taskbar or its keyboard shortcut, place keys on the screen controls and save. Keep only the games you play; every extra app eats RAM on low-end machines.

Troubleshooting common PrimeOS errors

Stuck on the PrimeOS logo or black screen

This is usually a graphics driver problem. Reboot, pick the safe mode or “nomodeset” style option in the boot menu, or press e on the boot entry and add nomodeset to the end of the kernel line. Older NVIDIA cards are the most common cause; laptops with Intel or AMD integrated graphics work best.

USB does not show in the boot menu

Recreate the USB with the other partition scheme (GPT vs MBR), try DD mode in Rufus, try a USB 2.0 port, and make sure Secure Boot is off. On some laptops you must also enable “USB Boot” in BIOS.

PC boots straight into Windows after install

Open BIOS boot order and move the PrimeOS/GRUB entry above Windows Boot Manager. If Windows keeps taking over, also disable Fast Startup.

No Wi-Fi or no sound

PrimeOS 2.1.3 uses a 2022 Linux kernel, so very new Wi-Fi cards may not be detected. A cheap USB Wi-Fi adapter or USB tethering from your phone is the easiest fix.

“Device not certified” or app will not open

Some apps check for a certified Android device or a newer Android version. There is no reliable fix for this on PrimeOS 2.x. Banking apps and some popular games may not work; use the options below instead.

Better modern alternatives if PrimeOS does not work

If your main goal is Android apps and games on a PC, these are the options that are current in 2026:

Option Best for Notes
Google Play Games on PC Official games on Windows Google’s own app. Needs Windows 10 (2004) or later, 8 GB RAM, 10 GB free on an SSD, 4 physical CPU cores, Intel UHD 630 class graphics and hardware virtualization turned on. Only games Google has approved are listed.
Android emulators (BlueStacks, LDPlayer, MuMu) Most Android games on Windows No dual boot needed; run inside Windows. See our best Android emulators for PC list.
Bliss OS Android installed directly on a PC Open-source and still developed, but the team has paused new public images while it builds its next version. The last public builds (16.x, Android 13) are archives without official support.
ChromeOS Flex Reviving an old laptop Free from Google and regularly updated, but it does not run Play Store apps. Read our ChromeOS Flex review.
Primebook laptop The newest PrimeOS 3.0 PrimeOS 3.0 (Android 15) comes only on Primebook hardware.

Note: Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) and the Amazon Appstore were removed from the Microsoft Store on 5 March 2025, so old guides that use WSA no longer work. Google Play Games and emulators need virtualization turned on in BIOS. Here is how: enable virtualization on Intel or AMD PCs.

Here is a quick look at the Primebook 3 Max, which runs Android and Linux apps together on PrimeOS 3.0:

PrimeOS pros and cons

Pros

  • Free, and runs Android apps natively on PC hardware (no emulator inside Windows)
  • Desktop-style taskbar and windows
  • Built-in key mapping for games
  • Light enough for old PCs with 4 GB RAM

Cons

  • No PC update since July 2022 and still BETA
  • Android 11 base, so some new apps and games will not install or run
  • No security updates, so avoid using it for banking or work accounts
  • Hardware support depends on an old kernel

Who should install PrimeOS in 2026?

Install it if you have an old PC that struggles with Windows, you enjoy trying new operating systems, and you want light Android games with keyboard controls. Skip it if you need the latest games, banking apps or long-term updates. For those, Google Play Games on PC or a good emulator inside Windows is the safer choice.

Verdict

PrimeOS was one of the best ways to turn a low-end PC into an Android gaming machine, and the 2.1.3 build still installs fine with the steps above. But since the free PC version stopped getting updates in 2022, treat it as a hobby OS. For everyday Android gaming on Windows today, the official Google Play Games app (if your PC meets the requirements) or a lightweight emulator is more reliable.

FAQs

Is PrimeOS still available to download in 2026?

Yes. PrimeOS 2.1.3 64-bit and the older Classic, Standard and Mainline builds are still hosted on the official PrimeOS SourceForge project. There is no newer free version for normal PCs.

Can I install PrimeOS 3.0 on my PC?

No. The Primebook team has said PrimeOS 3.0 is exclusive to Primebook laptops and won’t be available for other devices.

Is PrimeOS safe?

The official ISO is not malware, but it has not had security updates since 2022. Use it for games and basic apps, and avoid logging in to banking or sensitive accounts.

Will PrimeOS delete my Windows files?

Not if you install it on a new partition made from unallocated space, as shown above. Choosing the wrong partition in the installer will erase it, so back up first.

Does PrimeOS work without a graphics card?

Yes. It works best on Intel and AMD integrated graphics. Older NVIDIA cards are the most common cause of boot problems.

How do I remove PrimeOS later?

In Windows Disk Management, delete the PrimeOS partition and extend your Windows drive into the free space. Then remove the PrimeOS entry from the boot menu (from BIOS boot options, or with a tool like EasyUEFI) so it does not show at startup.
