5 Ways to Free up RAM on Windows 10 or Ways to Reduce High RAM Usage on Windows 10 OR 11

Published:

If you are still having problems freeing up RAM storage space, it is possible that you are running too many programs and applications without realizing it. For Windows 10 machines, use one of these five methods to free up RAM storage space: Computer RAM consumption should be closely monitored to ensure that your supply does not run out before you actually need it.

1. Track Memory and Clean Up Processes

To keep track of how much memory is being used by your computer, go to the task manager and look at the running processes. This is where you’ll be able to see which programs are currently running and how much disc space they are consuming on your computer.

To find where your computer’s memory is located, do the following:

  • To open the Task Manager, press and hold the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys at the same time.
  • Select the “Processes” tab from the drop-down menu.
  • To see how much space they are taking up, select the “Memory” column from the drop-down menu.

Your computer’s time and space consumption can now be identified by which of your programs is consuming the most resources. In the event that you discover something suspicious taking up space in your memory, you should delete any programs that you do not need or use anymore.

2. Disable any startup programmes that you do not require.

For those of you who have been using your computer for at least a few years, you have probably downloaded a significant quantity of software that you have either forgotten about or no longer use. After the processes tab has informed you of which apps are taking up the most space, you will want to go on to the startup tab and disable those that are no longer required.

To prevent programs from starting up upon startup, do the following:

  • From the Task Manager, go to the “Startup” tab and click on it.
  • To arrange the programmes from most frequently used to least frequently used, select “Startup impact.”
  • Use the right-click menu to turn off any programmes that you don’t require.

Startup programs are ones that run as soon as your computer is turned on and ready to use. When these programs begin to run, they each take up a little amount of RAM in the background without your knowledge or agreement. After a while, all of the software and programs can start to pile up in terms of cost. Make certain that any that aren’t required are disabled or eliminated.

3. Disable any background applications that are currently running.

Next on the list of items that could be consuming RAM are applications that have been configured to run in the background automatically. It’s possible that you’ve been using your computer for years without recognizing that some of these applications are taking up valuable RAM storage. You’ll quickly run out of space on your computer’s memory, battery, and data bandwidth if you do this.

To turn off background applications, do the following:

  • Navigate to the computer’s settings.
  • Make a selection from the “Privacy” category.
  • Scroll down the left-hand panel until you reach the section labelled “Background Apps.”
  • Turn off any apps that you aren’t currently using.

Applications are frequently set up to operate in the background of your device without your knowledge. This enables them to display notifications and automatically update their software as a result of this. By turning off this feature on programs that aren’t being used, you can free up RAM storage.

4. When shutting down, delete the page file.

The page files on your computer are not cleared or reset when you restart your computer because, unlike RAM, they are kept on the hard drive and are not cleared when you restart your computer. As a result, when RAM is kept in page files, it is not wiped along with the rest of the RAM when the computer is turned down.

Clearing the page files on your hard drive can free up any RAM that has been kept on it, allowing your computer to perform more efficiently as a result. The same way you can set the RAM to automatically clear when your computer shuts down, you can set this as well. This can be accomplished by launching the Registry Editor as follows:

  • In the start menu search bar, type in the words “Registry Editor.”
  • To authorise Registry Editor to make changes to your device, select “Yes” on the confirmation screen.
  • Scroll down to and choose “HKEY LOCAL MACHINE” from the list on the left.
  • Continue scrolling until you reach the word “SYSTEM.”
  • Select the “CurrentControlSet” option.
  • Locate and select the word “Control.”
  • Select “Session Manager” from the drop-down menu.
  • Look for and select “Memory Management” from the drop-down menu.
  • Choose “ClearPageFileAtShutdown” from the drop-down menu.
  • Enter the number “1” in the Value data field and press the OK button.

5. Minimize the use of visual effects.

With the advancement of technology, there are a plethora of new options for computer graphics and visual effects. It is possible, for example, to disable the animations for apps and icons that consume storage space for extraneous effects. If you notice that you are running low on RAM storage, there are various effects that you may disable until you have more memory available to you.

To gain access to your computer’s visual effects, do the following:

  • Open the File Explorer on your computer.
  • To access the properties of a computer, right-click on its name in the left-side panel and select properties.
  • On the left-hand side of the screen, select “Advanced system settings.”
  • Select the “Advanced” tab from the drop-down menu.
  • Performance options can be found under the “Performance” category.
  • Change the setting to “Adjust for optimal performance.”

This option will turn off all animated features on your computer’s display. This will provide you with extra storage space, but it will substantially reduce the aesthetics of your computer. The same page, on the other hand, allows you to personalise the visual effects that your computer will use according to your preferences.
