Microsoft Edge Enhancements: Video Summarization, Plugins, AI for PDFs on iOS and Android

Published:

Enhancements to Microsoft Edge’s Copilot for iOS and Android now include video summarization, plugins, and AI for PDFs.

Now that Microsoft Edge is accessible on iOS and Android, users can enjoy a fully functional Copilot experience. This includes plugins, PDF AI, and the option to create video summaries, just as on the desktop. Microsoft is also testing a full-screen version of Copilot optimized for the iPad on iOS.

Everyone may access the stable channel, where you can find Microsoft Edge’s improved Copilot for iOS and Android. However, to test out all the new features, you might have to enable a few experimental flags. Due to an A/B test of AI by Microsoft, some of you may already have access to Copilot functions without flags turned on.

With the default settings, the Copilot feature of Microsoft Edge on both iOS and Android can summarize PDFs, provide text-based responses, and create AI pictures powered by DALL-E 3. Click the Copilot button to have AI write a synopsis of a PDF you’ve opened in Edge. This is compatible with both iOS and Android.

To make your lengthy PDF papers more concise, Edge Copilot can accomplish what you see in the above display and extract the “key points” from them. As a bonus, you may interact with various parts of the PDF. Word on the street from Microsoft is that the PDF AI integration in Edge will enhance contextual inquiries with GPT-4 Turbo.

iOS users may also use PDF AI. To utilize the AI on a big screen, however, you may visit Edge://flags and activate an experimental flag named “Pad support Copilot” if you’re using an iPad and don’t see Copilot in the menu.

You might also have to activate the flags in the picture below if Copilot still doesn’t support PDF on iOS.

Moreover, Edge Copilot can transcribe your videos. The ability to summarize YouTube videos is accessible on both iOS and Android devices with Edge, although it is dependent on the presence of a transcript. This is because the video Copilot on Edge only summarizes the phrases, not the frames.

Microsoft Edge Video Summary with Copilot

Edge Copilot summarizes only pre-processed films or subtitled YouTube footage. Microsoft has stated that it should be compatible with most YouTube material, but it does not guarantee that you can describe every video.

You must preprocess the video if it is to function. In a comment to a user on X, Microsoft explained that while they can always rely on subtitles if the movie has them, it won’t function if the video doesn’t, and they still need to preprocess it.

Copilot Plugins on Both iOS and Android

Microsoft is also adding copilot plugins for iOS and Android. This lets you utilize Bing as a separate chatbot, similar to ChatGPT, by turning off its AI search engine features. Turning off search makes Copilot as quick as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but it may provide out-of-date results for some queries. Just like before, only some have access to this function. However, the Edge menu even has third-party plugins for those fortunate enough.

A third-party plugin named “Shop” finds the most incredible bargains on electronics. In a similar vein, “Instacart,” another third-party plugin, excels in locating recipes for your evening meal.

Microsoft is in the process of testing additional Copilot plugins and is planning to integrate ChatGPT’s GPTs into Bing shortly.
