Software receives its first major update in more than three years
Microsoft has made SQL Server 2022 (opens in new window) its latest flagship database software product available for general release.
This is the tech giant’s most “Azure enabled release of SQL Server” since 1989 when the software was launched. It would also mark the software’s third major update in three years.
These new solutions are part of the Microsoft Intelligent Data Platform. This cloud platform was launched in May 2022 and aims to integrate databases, analytics, data governance, and more.
Microsoft’s SQL Server 2022 Update
Microsoft claims that SQL Server 2022 will offer improved integrations with multiple Microsoft Azure services such as the data analytics platform Azure Synapse Link, as well as its data governance solution Microsoft Purview.
According to the company, these will allow customers to “drive deeper insights, predictions and governance from their data at large”
The company also claims that the new Azure integration includes managed disaster recovery (DR), to Azure SQL Managed Instance, and “near-real-time analytics”. It claims that these features will enable database administrators to manage their data estates more easily and with less impact on end users.
As part of the default set-up process for SQL Server 2022, the update apparently also includes an easy connection to Azure Arc.
Microsoft claims this will allow additional capabilities such as a single view for all SQL Servers on-premises and in Azure. It also provides protection for data on-premises using Microsoft Defender for Cloud.
The integration with Azure Arc is also expected to include support for Microsoft Single Sign-On and Azure Active Directory.
