Windows 10 is the most recent version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. There have been many different versions of Windows over the years, including Windows 8 (released in 2012), Windows 7 (2009), Windows Vista (2006), and Windows XP (2001). While older versions of Windows mainly ran on desktop and laptop computers, Windows 10 is also designed to run equally well on tablets.

An operating system manages all of the hardware and software on a computer. Without it, the computer would be useless. To learn more about how operating systems work, check out Understanding Operating Systems and Getting to Know the OS in our Computer Basics tutorial.

How is Windows 10 different from other versions?

Many users complained that Windows 8, the previous version of Windows, was confusing and difficult to use. As a result, Windows 10 looks and feels similar to older versions. Still, it includes a lot of new features and improvements. Watch the video below to learn more:

Start menu

In contrast to Windows 8’s Start screen, Windows 10 now features a revamped Start menu that harkens back to a more traditional design. Additionally, the Start menu has been enhanced to improve the accessibility of essential applications.

Microsoft Edge

This new browser, Microsoft Edge, aims to provide Windows users with an improved web browsing experience. With enhanced speed, security, and a plethora of new features, Microsoft Edge is positioned to replace Internet Explorer as the default web browser. However, users still have the option to use another browser if they so choose.

Cortana

Just like Siri and Google Now, you have the capability to interact with this virtual assistant using your computer’s microphone. Cortana can assist by answering queries such as What’s the weather forecast for today? and carry out tasks like setting reminders for you, including tasks as basic as taking out the trash, and a variety of other functions.

Multiple desktops and Task view

Rather than cluttering your screen with multiple open windows, you now have the option to move some of them to a virtual desktop for better organization. The new Task View feature simplifies the management of all your open windows, allowing for easier navigation and multitasking.

Action Center

The updated Action Center in Windows now offers enhanced features compared to previous versions. It has been expanded to provide quick access to commonly used settings like Wi-Fi connectivity and tablet mode. Additionally, it serves as the hub for important notifications, so you’ll receive alerts about updates or other important events directly within the Action Center.

Tablet mode

Contrary to Windows 8, Windows 10 offers a distinct separation between desktop and tablet modes. When using a keyboard and mouse with Windows 10, users are placed in desktop mode by default. For devices equipped with a touchscreen, users have the option to switch to tablet mode when desired. Tablet users can easily switch back to desktop mode if they prefer the traditional desktop interface.

Should you upgrade to Windows 10?

Windows 10 bears a closer resemblance to older versions compared to Windows 8. It’s not only faster and more secure, but Microsoft will provide ongoing support for it for several years. If your computer is currently running Windows 7 or 8.1 and meets the system requirements, you have the option to upgrade to Windows 10 by purchasing it directly from Microsoft. For these compelling reasons, we recommend upgrading to Windows 10 if possible. Stay tuned for our upcoming lesson on how to upgrade to Windows 10.

Conclusion

Windows 10 represents a significant improvement over Windows 8, offering a more traditional user experience while still incorporating modern features. The ability to switch between desktop and tablet modes, the revamped Start menu, the updated Action Center, and other new features make Windows 10 a valuable upgrade for a smoother and more efficient computing experience.
