You can expect faster entry-level phones and midrange phones, which are better for video, gaming, and photos.
Qualcomm has today unveiled its latest mobile system-on a chip (SoC) entries in the Snapdragon 6 series and Snapdragon 4 series.
These SoCs are the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 (Opens in new window) respectively. Both new SoCs promise more performance and features for mid-range and entry-level devices. They will also be used in devices as soon as possible.
Snapdragon 4 Gen 1
The latest entry-level SoC is first. Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 is the 6nm 4 series’ first chip. It offers a 15% Kryo CPU performance increase and a 10% Adreno GPU upgrade compared to the Snapdragon 480. Qualcomm claims that entry-level devices will be able to use the new 4-series processor for smoother multitasking, and “immersive entertainment”.
The Snapdragon 4 Generation 1 has a triple image signal processor (ISP), which allows for three cameras to be captured simultaneously. It also combines it with multi-frame noise reduction to produce “crisp” 108MP images. This is the highest-quality photo capture available in the 4-series range. Qualcomm’s AI Engine is also available. It allows you to access an AI Engine that provides voice assistance and noise suppression.
Connectivity is provided by the Snapdragon X51 5G Modem RF System, which allows for 2.5Gbps peak 5G download speeds and FastConnect 6200, which provides premium 2×2 WiFi and Bluetooth 5.2.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 1
The Snapdragon 6 Generation 1 promises a greater leap in performance for midrange devices with a 40% faster Kryo CPU, and 35% faster Adreno GPU than the Snapdragon 695. The 7th Gen Qualcomm AI Engine provides an additional 3x improvement in AI performance, allowing for AI-based activity monitoring and access to an intelligent speech assistant.
Like the Snapdragon 4 Generation 1, Qualcomm also included a triple ISP to take 108MP photos. However, there is also the possibility of capturing video with computational HDR using staggered HDR sensor image sensors. This is a first in the 6-series.
This new SoC can run 60fps with HDR thanks to its improved CPU/GPU performance. With a 2.9Gbps peak 5G download speed, the included Snapdragon X62 5G Modem RF System will not keep you waiting. The Qualcomm FastConnect 6700 offers 2×2 WiFi 6E (another first in the Snapdragon 6 series) as well as Bluetooth 5.2.
Motorola and iQOO already support these new Snapdragon chips and will not have to wait too long to get them. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 will likely be commercially available in Q3, while it is expected that the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 will become available in Q1 2023.
The Snapdargon 4 Gen 1 will be used in India by the iQOO Z6 Lite, the first smartphone to do so in the world.
