Rumor: Apple’s Dynamic Islands Coming to All iPhone 15 Models

You can still get ProMotion tech or always-on display in base models, but don’t wait.

People are still unboxing iPhone 14 smartphones and the rumor mill has already begun to predict Apple’s next smartphone.

Ross Young, a display industry analyst, tweeted Sunday (Opens in new window) that Dynamic Island, the notch replacement currently only available on iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro Max models–will be rolling out to all iPhone 15 models.

Apple describes the feature as “integrated into iOS 16…to seamlessly display what you need, whenever you need it.” The shape of the Island, which is shaped like a pill, can change depending on the apps running in the background to highlight incoming calls and countdown timesrs. Dynamic Island will provide instant information via Apple’s API Live Activities.

Young’s prediction is right: The Dynamic Island will be standard on all new iPhones beginning next year. It will replace the much-maligned cutout Apple introduced in 2017 with the iPhone X. This could encourage more people to jump to the iPhone 15 base model, rather than making the small hop between the more recent versions.

You can still expect other iPhone 14 Pro features like an always-on screen and smooth-scrolling ProMotion tech to be added to upcoming base phones. Young suggested that Apple’s supply chain is “not ready” for it yet and that the iPhone 16 would be a “better choice.”

Some smartphone makers have used a different approach to Apple’s TrueDepth array of cameras (i.e. The “notch”–which houses the top speaker and camera and Face ID technology- opted for a “hole punch” approach instead, making a small circular cut in the top center of the display.
