Twitter to Charge $20 per Month for a Blue Mark

Existing verified accounts will have 90 days to either subscribe or be removed from verification.

Elon Musk won’t be wasting his time making changes to the newly acquired social network. The Twitter Blue subscription will quadruple in cost next month.

According to The Verge (Opens in new window), Twitter Blue’s optional subscription costs $4.99 per month. This will increase to $19.99 if users want to maintain their blue checkmark verification. It is only months after Musk said that Twitter Blue was too expensive.

Musk apparently has set an internal deadline for Twitter engineers to complete the revamped Blue subscription by Nov. 7. They will be fired if they fail to meet the deadline, but they will be assisted by Tesla engineers who have been brought in as advisors. Musk is said to have been working all weekend and into the night to implement changes to the service.

The planned price increase for existing Twitter Blue subscribers may prove too much. Preliminary features include: ad-free articles and bookmark folders, custom icons, themes, navigation, top articles and Reader. These features will not be available at the higher price.

Blue checkmark verification, which is currently not part of a subscription, is an option that can be used. Any Twitter account that has a checkmark will have 90 days to sign up for Twitter Blue, or their verification will be removed. How many people will spend $240 per year to keep it?

This news was certainly noticed by people if Elon Musk wanted them to notice his Twitter acquisition. The billionaire seems to be just beginning. Musk tweeted earlier today the question, “Bring back Vine?” (Opens in new window)
