As previously reported, Xiaomi and Leica have formed a strategic relationship, and their first co-developed phone will be released in July.
Xiaomi has never partnered with a camera brand before, but Leica has been doing this for a long time. Even if the US government is currently challenging Huawei’s use of its technology in the country, Leica’s most fruitful collaboration has been with Huawei. Since Xiaomi is a leading smartphone brand, the relationship between Leica and Xiaomi is logical.
Xiaomi isn’t the only company to draw on the expertise of well-known camera manufacturers in the development of its mobile devices. With the X80 series, Vivo has partnered with ZEISS, while Oppo and OnePlus have collaborated with Hasselblad to use the Swedish brand’s photography know-how in their flagship phones. As a result of the cooperation, Xiaomi’s next flagship phone may be anticipated to bear the name of the German photography business and at least one camera function.

When it comes to producing the best possible user experience, Xiaomi is all about pushing smartphone photography to the limit. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun noted in a press release that the company’s “pursuits and concepts” and Leica’s “tuning aesthetic orientations” are aligned.
As is the case with announcements of this type, information are usually kept under wraps until after the announcement has been made. As a result, we don’t know if this relationship will have a wider influence on the development of Xiaomi’s next flagship or if it will be restricted to a few camera filters, as we have seen before on other phones that feature a camera brand’s branding on their bodies.
If rumours are to be believed, Xiaomi’s upcoming top camera phone with Leica might be the Xiaomi 12 Ultra and employ Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset to show that it is more powerful than the Xiaomi 12 Pro and comparable phones now on the market. However, I’m not going to put my money on this phone being referred to as Xiaomi 13 because Xiaomi only announces one major flagship phone every year and the others are incremental upgrades.
