Exciting Microsoft Edge Upgrades in 2024 – AVIF, Video Frame Saving, and Super Drag & Drop Features Revealed

Published:

Upgrade your Microsoft Edge with these stunning new features: AVIF, video frame saving, and super drag & drop.

An exciting upgrade to Microsoft Edge is planned for 2024 with several new features, such as support for the AV1 Image File Format (AVIF), a new method to drag and drop links to open them in a new tab instantly, and the ability to save video frames (i.e., capture screenshots of the video in its original resolution).

A Microsoft Edge engineer has stated in a Mastodon post that the browser will have native support for decoding AVIF files in version 121. The Alliance for Open Media is one of several groups vocal in supporting the next-generation picture format AVIF.

After much wait, Microsoft is finally adding AVIF support to Edge, while Chrome has had it since version 85. AVIF can lower total data consumption as it is much less than JPEG or WebP. Microsoft Edge might decrease bandwidth use and speed up page loads that utilize AVIF if it had native support for the format.

If you right-click on a video in Microsoft Edge Canary, you’ll see this option enabled by default. To get the context menu that displays the two options to “Save video frame as..” and “Copy video frame,” you may have to right-click twice on YouTube.

You may choose the format and location to save the video frame selected by clicking the “Save video frame as..” button. In contrast, you may manually save the frame using the copy video frame option, which merely copies the frame to the clipboard.

Microsoft Edge Super Drag and Drop

Microsoft is making it super easy for Edge users to manipulate text and links with a new “Super Drag and Drop” function. The days of creating new tabs by dragging links to the tab bar and holding the mouse button are over. Microsoft Edge Super Drag and Drop is here to make your job convenient.

“Super Drag and Drop” makes short work of dragging links to other locations. A new tab with the URL will pop up in your browser. Search for “Super Drag Drop” at “edge://flags” to activate the capability, which Microsoft still evaluates.

How to Get Microsoft Edge Super Drag and Drop

In Microsoft Edge’s settings, go to Super Drag and Drop to adjust the behavior of the drag and drop feature. Launching the new tab in the foreground or background is available there.

Links open in a new tab when the background is selected, but you don’t lose your existing tab. In contrast, the foreground option allows you to drag and drop tabs to change your emphasis from one tab to another. With these enhancements, Windows 11 will support Mica in Microsoft Edge.
